What is DISCOVER Online?
DISCOVER Online is a career decision-making program and database accessible on the Internet that can match information about you with the characteristics of over 500 occupations. It can help you to explore your work-related interests, abilities, values, and experiences as well as what you might prefer in terms of job characteristics. DISCOVER can also provide you with information about occupations you are likely to enjoy and be successful in, while assisting you in making mature decisions about your life.
Is DISCOVER right for me?
There are some common situations when using the DISCOVER program is a good starting point. These include:
- considering choosing or changing your major.
- considering changing your career.
- becoming comfortable with your major and exploring what occupations may be related to it.
- becoming comfortable with your major, knowing what occupations are related to it, but wanting to explore additional occupations that may be well-suited for your personal interests and skills.
- verifying some tentative decisions regarding your career choice.
- learning more about the career planning process and making sure you are
"on the right track."
What can I expect from using the program?
DISCOVER is often an excellent starting point in the career decision making process. It can provide you with information about yourself, about work, and about occupations, which can help you begin to make some tentative plans. You should not expect quick or easy answers from this computer program. As you know, setting goals for your future is extremely important, and will require time and careful consideration. DISCOVER, combined with follow-up appointments with a career counselor, can help you to make informed decisions.
I'm not sure if it's right for me. What now?
We encourage you to discuss your particular situation with a career counselor during Drop-in Hours or in a scheduled appointment. There are many instances when it would be a better use of your time to utilize other Career Development Office resources, and a counselor will help you assess this. Examples of these would include learning about a particular occupation you have in mind or learning about the job search (resume, contacting employers, interviewing) or graduate school.
How do I get started on the DISCOVER program?
To create a personal login account, you need to be issued a DISCOVER "token" for your first login to DISCOVER Online. Come to the CDO, second floor Gregory Hall, to get your "token" and instruction sheet. Don't forget to schedule a follow-up appointment with a career counselor!
