Procedures for Admission

In order to be considered for admission to graduate studies at SUNY Fredonia, you will need to complete and submit all sections outlined in the application. Please review all information and instructions to be sure you are properly providing the information and documentation required. Only after the Graduate Office verifies that your application is fully submitted, including letters of recommendation, will all materials be sent to the appropriate Director and/or Chairperson for the initiation of their departmental review process.

Note: Some academic departments have different deadlines. For example, the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology has a February 1 deadline for the following summer or fall semesters. It is important that you contact the particular departments for any schedule exceptions and additional requirements for admission.

Deadlines for regular graduate applications (at the non-refundable application fee rate of $50) refer to the dates all materials are received by the Graduate Office.

Late applications for all programs expect Speech Pathology will be processed on an incoming basis, but the non-refundable fee rate for late applications (received after November 1, 2002) will be $100. Applicants should be aware that the full graduate review often takes 4-6 weeks. If you apply later than the deadlines above, you may temporarily be granted "non-degree status" until a final acceptance decision has been reached. Non-degree students are permitted to take a total of only 9 credit hours.


General Criteria for Admission

  • Completion of a baccalaureate degree at an accredited four-year institution with an appropriate major and adequate depth of undergraduate preparation
  • An Application for Admission to Graduate Study filed with the Graduate Dean and approved by the chairperson of the desired department or by the Graduate Dean
  • Submission of official transcripts from all institutions attended (except Fredonia) covering prior graduate as well as undergraduate preparations
  • For applicants to degree programs, submission of at least two recent letters of recommendation from individuals who can attest to the applicant's qualifications for advanced study
  • For students in programs leading to permanent certification to teach, proof of the appropriate provisional certification
  • Resume (including a Statement of Intent explaining your interest, what your hopes are, and why you selected SUNY Fredonia)
