Web Content Management Task Force

Why we would want to use a CMS?

Content management systems offer benefits for both website authors and administrators. Web authors can easily create web pages with little or no knowledge of html. Another benefit to using a CMS is the ability to use templates and common design elements to ensure consistent design throughout the site. The author can then concentrate on content over design. To change the appearance of the website, the administrators need only modify the templates and not each individual page.

A CMS may also simplify the delegation of responsibility for the provision and maintenance of content on the website. Many CMS's enable different levels of access to be set for separate areas of the website. This can usually be done through a web browser based interface.

Extra features, such as form creation, announcements, RSS feeds, calendars, and other components may be built into the CMS. The provision of these types of features would save time that would otherwise be spent developing or attempting to integrate such components.
