Learn tips on scanning, optimizing images, and selecting colors

The following online resources will be explored:

Scanning Tips

Scanning 101
Not fortunate enough to have a digital camera? This Webmonkey.com workshop runs through the proper procedures for scanning images for the web.

Image Optimization

JPEG Wizard
This website (and free download, if you choose) reduces the file size of your photos and other .jpg images for faster download times. Easy to use and free!

Implementing Images

When viewing other webpages, question how things are done. For example, HTMLGoodies.com nicely illustrates how those attractive rounded corners are created using a blend of tables and curved corner images.

The banner for the International Education Center is one image of flags (similar, but not exactly this image) horizontally stretched with a white to transparent gradient applied above it and text laid on top. And if you roll your cursor over both the left and right hand portions of that banner, you'll note that the image is actually two separate jpegs laid next to one another that link to their appropriate pages.

Click the numbers for more examples of modifying images for your own use: 1, 2, 3.

Selecting Colors

The hexadecimal web-safe color for Fredonia Blue is #003399 (pantone 286; RGB 0 56 168).

Non-dithering Colors
An HTML Goodies page describing the concept of dithering and why it might be good to avoid it.

Another Non-dithering Colors List
Webmonkey's very easy to read presentation of the 216 non-dithering colors.

Death of the Colorsafe Web Palette
This is a technical article presenting the problems of the notion of "websafe."

ColorServe Java
Not sure if that blue will be readable on that other blue? This page allows you to select background, text, link, visited link, and active link colors to see what they look like together. Easy to use.

Color Lab
Useful in determining how various web-safe colors will look in combination.

Color Maker
Easily sets up your color combinations of background, text and links.

Other Resources

Webmonkey.com
One of my favorite sources for information. Can be somewhat technical.

W3Schools.com
Numerous tutorials that allow you to play with code on their site and take it with you - nothing fancy, just very good information.

HTMLGoodies.com
Good tutorials but you must sift through extra editorial text.
