Welcome to the College of Visual and Performing Arts

Serving as one of the most active and significant cultural centers in Western New York, we shape the future of the arts by training the next generation of artists and arts advocates. Our outstanding faculty and staff work together every day to create excellence in research; to present the finest in the visual and performing arts from the local to the international levels; and to engage our students and audiences as participants in the creation of the best the arts have to offer.  View our calendar of events, browse our departmental web sites, and come for a visit. Feel free to contact me directly for more information.

Faculty Spotlight

This month we're featuring the leaders of our four units in the College of Visual and Performing Arts. From left in the photo are Jefferson Westwood, Director of Rockefeller Arts Center; Karl Boelter, Director of the School of Music; Bob Booth, Chair of Visual Arts and New Media; (Ralph Blasting, Dean of the College); and Tom Loughlin, Chair of the Department of Theater and Dance.  Each in his own way, they are outstanding artists, producers, teachers, and scholars.  They work together to create a dynamic and supportive environment in which their students and faculty can accomplish their best work.  Collectively, they have over 50 years' experience in their positions and over 100 years of membership in the Fredonia community.  The exhibits and performances they oversee contribute greatly to the cultural vitality of our community and have a positive economic impact on our regional economy.  Their energy, commitment, and vision have made the College of Visual and Performing Arts what it is today.

 Student Spotlight

Carl Lam

Carl Lam has had a great run at SUNY Fredonia, and his senior year has been the icing on the cake the he built.  Carl graduated on May 17th with a triple major: Applied Music, Journalism, and Audio Production.  This year, he was awarded a SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence and the SUNY Fredonia Lanford Presidential Prize for outstanding service.

Coming from Hamburg, New York, Carl said that he “never expected to love Fredonia as much as I do now.”  Carl began as a Music Education major, but found that he needed to free up time in his schedule for more activities.  “The BA in Music is a perfect major to combine with something else,” he said – and proceeded to add two majors, co-host a radio show, write for the newspaper, and serve on more committees than will fit here.  Carl says that “everything changed” when he was invited to play in the Chamber Orchestra during his first week at Fredonia.  He felt connected to a student group, was elected to the Student Association, and just kept joining committees from there.   Best Fredonia experience?  “Performing with Yo Yo Ma comes to mind immediately.  That was the coolest experience I’ve ever had.”

Carl will begin a Master’s degree program in College Student Personnel at Canisius College this fall – although he’s also interested in Meteorology……

Best of luck, Carl!

Rockefeller Arts Center Expansion begins!
Construction has started in earnest on the 40,000-square-foot expansion of Rockefeller Arts Center.  Our loading dock is gone, as we prepare to add five new art studios, a new scenic paint shop, three dance studios, two acting classrooms, and a cafe.  And that's just the new space.  Phase Two includes renovation of our current spaces to incorporate the latest technology for graphic and theatre design.  Get all the details, including a live webcam of the construction site at:
