Construction Map summer 2008

The following projects will be underway this summer:

1. Williams Center Skylight Replacement Project


Work will include the removal of the existing skylight and the installation of a new skylight and clearstory window system. Minor work inside the building will be required to prepare the placement of the new skylight as well as the installation of horizontal shading and the installation of a new projection screen and projector scissor lift and platform. 
Work schedule is May 19, 2008 – August 8, 2008

2. Williams Center Connections Food Court Rehabilitation (new Centre Pointe Lounge)

The FSA renovations and upgrades of the food court area on the lower level of the Williams Center for the new Centre Pointe Lounge include complete demolition of the food court and construction of a new serving area, a faculty and staff dining/banquet room, office areas, new central seating area, raised seating area and a feature food bar.
Work schedule is November 2007 – August 18, 2008

3. Soccer Stadium Phase II


Construction for a new soccer stadium support building will begin this summer and will include two team rooms, training/first aid room, two officials’ locker rooms, concession area, public restrooms, ticket booth, and a three-compartment press box that will house a press room, video deck and an Alumni box.  
Work schedule is June 16, 2008 – October 17, 2008

4. Lake Way Drive Improvements and Soccer Stadium Entrance

The rehabilitation of Lake Way Drive and the parking area in front of University Stadium (Lot 9) will transform the campus entrance to create an attractive roadway leading to the new University Stadium Gateway Building.  Most notable, the project includes a new traffic circle at the entrance to University Stadium.  The traffic circle will provide an area for drop off and pick up at the main gates.  The traffic circle will be designed with many new plantings and a masonry block sitting wall.  In addition, the project includes the planting of over 60 new trees along Lake Way Drive and parking lot 9.  Lake Way Drive and parking lot sections 9A and 9B will be closed during the projects. Furthermore, pedestrian traffic along the walkway at Ring Road will be restricted at times due to the installation of the new concrete walkway.
Work schedule is May 2008 – August 2008

5. Campus Wide Satellite Boiler Phase I, II and III


The campus is moving forward with a new campus wide satellite boiler system that will eliminate the use of the current central heating and cooling system. Work will involve the removal of existing High Temperature Hot Water (HTHW) equipment and the installation of new satellite boilers.  All three phases of this project will be under construction this summer. 
Phase I will include the following nine buildings:

  • Gregory Hall
  • Disney, Eisenhower, Kasling, and Grissom residence halls
  • Dods and Steele Halls
  • LoGrasso Hall
  • Erie Dining Hall

Work on Gregory Hall; Disney, Eisenhower, Kasling and Grissom residence halls; and LoGrasso Hall was completed during the summer of 2007.  Erie Dining Hall was completed in the spring of 2008.  Completion schedule for Dods and Steele Halls is August 2008.


Phase II will include the following six buildings:

  • Williams Center
  • Alumni Hall
  • Nixon Hall
  • Andrews Complex (4 buildings)

All work related to the above Phase II locations is scheduled to begin May 19, 2008, with a completion date of August 31, 2008.
Phase III will include the following seven buildings:

  • Jewett Hall (includes boilers for all of Mason Hall/Reed Library (Carnahan Jackson Center)/McEwen Hall)
  • Fenton/Houghton Hall
  • Services Complex

All work related to the above Phase III locations is scheduled to begin May 19, 2008, with a completion date of August 31, 2009.

The Central Heating Plant will officially shut down in the spring of 2009.
Work schedule for all three phases of this project is May 14, 2007 – August 31, 2009

6. SUNY Fredonia Technology Incubator 


Construction for a Technology Incubator in the City of Dunkirk is scheduled to break ground late July/early August.  The Incubator will consist of a two-story 20,000 square foot office and dry lab complex with conference rooms and multi-purpose room, kitchenette and administration space.  The site will allow for 42 parking spaces. In addition, showers in the restrooms will accommodate individuals that prefer to ride their bicycles vs. cars to commute to work.  The building is designed to meet silver requirements related to LEED and State University Construction Fund directives. 
Work schedule is July/August 2008 – September 2009

7. Nixon Hall Rehab of Bathrooms and Upgrade of Fire Alarm and Electrical System


Work will include the renovations of eight bathrooms located throughout three floors along with the installation of a new fire alarm system and the addition of an electrical outlet in each student room. This project will also include the reconstruction of the loading dock and accessible ramp located on the west side of the building.
Work schedule is May 19, 2008 – August 8, 2008

8. Grissom Hall – Elevator Rehabilitation


This project includes repairs and upgrades to the elevator in Grissom Hall.
Work schedule is June 2008 – August 2008

9. Nixon Hall – Emergency Generator and Enclosure


A small addition will be built at the west end of Nixon Hall facing University Commons to house a new emergency generator that will feed Alumni Hall, Chautauqua Hall and Nixon Hall.  As part of the project, there will be new wires installed to Alumni Hall and Chautauqua Hall.  The adjacent sidewalks and the Alumni Hall parking lot will be closed for a few days during the excavation.
Work schedule is May 2008 – August 2008

10. Maytum Hall Access Control System

New card readers and security cameras will be installed at the entrances to Maytum Hall including the loading dock of Reed Library.  In addition, existing stand alone card readers at several interior rooms will be upgraded to the new ADT system.
Work schedule is June 2008 – August 2008

 11. Ring Road Asphalt Improvements

The existing asphalt surface will be milled and replaced from the entrance to parking lot 9C near the outdoor track up to Old Main Drive near Mason Hall.  The road will be closed during the milling procedure then reopened to traffic while work continues at the adjacent parking lot 9 and parking lot 10 improvement projects.  The road will be closed again in phases during the installation of the new top layer of asphalt.  Detour signs will be in place to direct traffic around campus.

12. Dods Hall Parking Lot 10 Improvements

The parking lot entrance from Ring Road will be relocated to increase parking; new islands for parking control and new lighting will be installed.  The relocation of the driveway will provide an additional 20 parking spaces in a parking lot at the center of campus.  Additionally, the entire parking lot will receive a new top layer of asphalt and new striping will be added.  The project includes new trees in the islands and along the perimeter.  Access to Dods Hall and the lower entrance of Steele Hall will be limited due to the creation of the new entrance driveway.

13. Parking Lots 4 and 5 (Parking lots on east side of Thompson and Fenton Halls)


Work on the reconstruction of parking lots 4 and 5 is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, May 21, 2008 (weather dependent).  Work will include milling the entire lot, resurfacing and striping.  This work is expected to take 2½ weeks.
Work schedule is May 21, 2008 – June 6, 2008

14. Campus Wide Parking Lot Renovations

Striping of all parking lots and crosswalks will be underway.  Sections of parking lots will be closed as this work progresses and in some instances, new traffic patterns will be in effect.  This work is dependent upon weather conditions.
Work schedule is May 19, 2008 – June 2008

15. Campus Wide Stamped Crosswalk Painting

Painting of the stamped asphalt crosswalks along University Parkway, Academic Avenue, Varsity Drive and Old Main Drive will occur during the summer.  The roadways will be closed to traffic for approximately two days during the project.  New traffic patterns will be in effect. This work is dependent upon weather conditions.

  • McGinnies Hall – brick masonry dumpster enclosure

  • Annual summer painting including student rooms, hallways and stairwells

  • King Concert Hall – stage floor refinishing
  • Marvel Theatre – wheel chair lift replacement
  • Mason Hall – door and locker painting
  • Maytum Hall – computer center air conditioning replacement
  • Maytum Hall – electrical feeder replacement
  • Maytum/Reed – ground floor tunnel flooring installation
  • McEwen Hall – new communications conference room
  • President’s House – roof replacement
  • Thompson Hall – exterior brick replacement and repointing
  • Williams Center – ticket office relocation and improvements
  • Painting of several offices, stairwells, hallways, doors and classrooms
  • Security camera - new installations and improvements (various locations)
  • Several door replacements will occur in many buildings

Campus Wide - Outside Site Improvements

  • Academic Avenue Phase 2 – new street lighting installation
  • Benches and recycling/trash receptacles will be installed at many campus locations
  • Campus wide exterior building signage installation
  • Parking Lot 19A – reroute storm drainage piping
  • University Stadium – site utilities (data/telephone/gas)
  • Various deteriorated sidewalk replacements will occur on campus
  • Reconstruction of Academic Avenue retaining wall
