Information for Transfer Students

female student reading newspaperFredonia is a "transfer friendly" campus. Approximately 1/3 of our new students enroll each year as transfers from other colleges. Admission directly into your major, an advisor assigned from your major, and a unique transfer summer orientation/registration program are just three reasons why our transfer graduation rate exceeds 80%! Choosing a major

Most transfer applicants are admitted to a specific major. With more than 45 credit hours you must apply into a major. We require a minimum GPA of 2.0 to be considered for admission, with a higher 2.5 requirement for Social Work (as well as many certification programs) and a 2.75 for those wishing to enter into Education. We also consider high school grades and SAT/ACT scores for students who present less than 30 credit hours of college study.

Transfer credit

A guide for transfer credit evaluation for many of the colleges from which we commonly receive transfer students is available at our Transfer Credit Information page. All academic courses successfully completed at a fully accredited college or university are transferable; however, we reserve the right to determine what constitutes an academic course. A tentative estimate of transfer credit will accompany your letter of acceptance. A course-by-course evaluation will be provided upon receipt of your final official transcript. Your grade point average does not transfer. We also require an official copy of your high school transcript showing graduation requirements have been met.

Degree requirements

Most baccalaureate degrees at Fredonia consist of 120 credits. You must complete a minimum of 45 credits at Fredonia, therefore a maximum of 75 transfer credit can be applied toward degree requirements at Fredonia. There are 3 components to our degree program:
  1. Major requirements Courses required by your department.
  2. General education requirements 36 credit hours in liberal arts and sciences, required of all students, regardless of major.
  3. Elective credit The opportunity to take courses of interest and develop a minor or concentration to complement your major.
Students entering Fredonia with their SUNY/CUNY A.A. or A.S. degree are guaranteed 60 transfer credits and junior standing. A maximum of 75 credits can be transferred from your previous college(s). As part of the SUNY system, Fredonia requires all graduates to complete the SUNY general education requirements. Many of these can be completed prior to transferring. Please consult your current college counselor to see if you have met these requirements or link to the State University General Education Requirements links to "Reports of Approved Courses" for lists of approved general education requirement courses. Note that if you have successfully completed a class that qualifies as a general education requirement at your SUNY college, that class, when transferred to Fredonia, fullfills the same general education requirement here. Classes that do not meet your current college's general education requirements will also not meet Fredonia's general education requirements.

Educational Opportunity Program Transfers

We welcome EOP transfer applicants. You must be an EOP student at the school from which you are transferring in order to be eligible for EOP (known at Fredonia as the Educational Development Program, or EDP) consideration at Fredonia.
