Women's Basketball

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- In the final regular-season home game for the Fredonia State women’s basketball team, the Devils dropped a 65-45 decision to the regular-season champion Cortland Red Dragons.

The Devils played a strong first half, leading by as many as eight points, 14-8, early on. Cortland closed the half with the final basket to take a 29-28 lead into the half. There were eight lead changes and three ties in the period.

Katie Landy (Jamestown) led the Devils with eight first-half points. Cortland was paced by Mary Bruns, also with eight.

Cortland jumped out fast in the second half, scoring the first eight points. Jessica Laing scored six of the eight. Cortland also had a 10-point run midway through the second half to take control of the game. They would lead 51-34 at that point.

Cortland (22-3 overall, 17-1 SUNYAC) extends its win streak to 17 games. Laing had a game-high 15 points, and added 10 rebounds. Jennifer Patten had 12 off the bench. Allyson Biordi had 11 points and 11 rebounds.

The Devils (10-14, 6-12) were led by Sierra Finch (Randolph) with 11 points. Landy finished with eight points and nine rebounds.

It was the final home game for four seniors: Landy, Merissa Gaeta (Kirkwood/Windsor), Tiffany Collinsworth (Romulus) and Maya Jordan (Bronx/DeWitt Clinton).

The Devils will see the Red Dragons again on Tuesday in the opening round of the SUNYAC Tournament.
