Devils scramble for game two win over Scranton

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Blue Devils split a doubleheader with Scranton on Monday. The fell 6-4 in game one, before taking the nightcap 7-5.

Scranton scored one run in the first and third innings, and put up two runs in the fourth and fifth inning off starting pitcher Justin Nowak.

Down 2-0 in the top of the fourth, the Devils got on the board when Rob Herrmann stole home to make it 2-1.

The Devils added two more in the sixth when Josh Greco stole home. Jake Nowak plated Herrmann with an RBI single to make it 6-3. The Devils final run came  in the seventh when Erik Pokornowski scored on a fielder’s choice.

Game two saw the Devils score two runs in the first, one in the second and two more in the third, to give the Devils a 5-1 lead after three.

Freshman hurler Caleb Brown struck out six of the first nine batters he faced to keep Scranton at bay.

Scranton would rally for four runs in the fifth to tie the game, 5-all, on four straight hits and two RBI groundouts. Fredonia State’s Andy Dlugosz would relieve Brown, and shut down Scranton the rest of the way.

The Devils won the game with a pair of the runs in the bottom of the sixth with three consecutive hits. Jake Nowak singled. Don Kirsch would triple to give the Devils a 6-5 lead. Herrmann capped the scoring with a line drive single passed a drawn-in infield.

Dlugosz picked up the win in relief and is now 2-0 on the season.

Offensively, Herrmann had four hits and two stolen bases on the day. Vinnie VanAuker, Matt LaPorte and Mark Majka each had multi-hit games on the afternoon.

The Devils are now 4-1 with four games remaining on their Southern Swing.
