FORT MYERS, FLA. -- A pair of two-run homeruns in the top of the seventh broke a 5-all tie to send the Blue Devils to a sweep of Millikin College on Friday.
The Devils began the rally with a leadoff double by Don Kirsch. After a groundout advanced Kirsch to third, Josh Melquist (Jamestown) blasted his second homerun of the spring over the left-field wall.
An infield flyout was followed by a single off the bat of Erik Pokornowski. Bryan Bongiovanni (Fredonia) then hit a low liner over the right-field wall to put the Devils up, 9-5.
Millikin made a game of it in the bottom of the ninth. Bill Maziarz hit a two run homer following a leadoff error to make it 9-7.
Blue Devil hurler Andy Dlugosz would complete the game, however, without allowing another run. Dlugosz picked up his third win, all in relief, of the spring trip.
Brian Lansing was the story of game one. The junior hurler tossed a complete-game six hitter, striking out five as the Devils cruised to a 10-2 win. The only runs he allowed were on a third-inning, two-run homer. Lansing improves to 1-1 on the season.
The Devils had several offensive heroes on the day. Mark Majka was six for six in the doubleheader. Jon Messina had six hits on the day, while Kirsch added five. Jake Nowak went four for four in the first game. Taylor Gahagen added a two-run homer. Matt LaPorte (Westfield) and Melquist each had three hits on the day.
The Devils finish the southern swing with a 7-2 mark. They outscored their opponents 80-39 during the trip.
