ERIE, Pa. -- Fredonia State and Penn State Behrend split their doubleheader Thursday, the Blue Devils winning the opener, 12-6, and the Lions bouncing back in the nightcap, 10-2.
The Blue Devils bashed 10 hits in the first game of the doubleheader, including two each by Don Kirsch (Cowlesville/Attica) and Jake Nowak (Cheektowaga/Maryvale), and a homer by Rob Herrmann (Trumansburg). Vinnie VanAuker (Hilton) collected four RBI with a double and a walk, while Kirsch scored four runs. The Blue Devils did their scoring in multiples -- two runs in the second and fifth innings, four in the fourth and the sixth.
Matt Sullivan (Buffalo/Bishop Timon) earned the win with an inning of scoreless relief. He was the second of four Fredonia State pitchers.
The Blue Devils took a 2-0 lead in the top half of the first of the second game, only to see the Lions take advantage of three straight walks and take a 3-2 lead. The Lions added two runs in the last of the second and the Blue Devils were unable to mount a comeback.
Herrmann had two hits in the nightcap while Matt LaPorte (Westfield) doubled, the lone Blue Devils' extra-base hit. Dan Greco (Lockport) was the losing pitcher.
Fredonia State ended the day with an 8-3 record while Behrend improved to 12-4.
The Blue Devils play their first SUNYAC games Saturday, a home doubleheader against Oneonta starting at noon.
