ERIE, Pa. -- Down 6-0 after one inning, the Blue Devils fought back only to see their effort go for naught, falling to Penn State Behrend, 13-12, on Wednesday.
The Devils began thier comeback with a run in the second inning. Don Kirsch (Attica) singled home Tommy Dee (Lackawanna/Bishop Timon) to make it 6-1.
The Devils erupted for seven runs in the third to take a 8-6 lead. Rob Herrmann's (Trumansburg) three-run double was the big blow. Vinnie VanAuker (Hilton), Jon Messina (Jamestown) and Josh Melquist (Jamestown) also had RBI singles.
Behrend added a run in the fourth on a Josh Fyffe home run. The Devils added a run of their own in the fifth as Melquist stole home on a double-steal, giving the Devils a 9-7 advantage.
The Lions added four in the sixth on three singles and a two-run double by Matt Bittner to take an 11-9 lead.
Not to be out-done, the Devils loaded the bases in the top of the seventh. Dillon Lowe (Pittford/Pittsford-Sutherland) then cleared the bases with a triple to put the Devils up 12-11.
Behrend tallied two runs in the bottom of the ninth to claim the wild 13-12 win.
Lowe had four hits for the Devils, including a double and triple. VanAuker added three hits. Kirsch had a pair and reached bases four times in the game.
Behrend improves to 25-12. The Devils (18-12) take on New Paltz this Saturday at Ludwig Field.
