FREDONIA, N.Y. -- For the fourth time in four seasons, Fredonia State catcher Rob Herrmann (Trumansburg/Trumansburg) was name to the SUNYAC All Conference Team. In addition, fellow senior captain -- and roomate -- Don Kirsch (Attica/Attica) also wrapped up a stellar career in earning conference recognition.

Herrmann batted .391 (50 for 128) on the season, and along with Kirsch, became only the fifth and sixth players in Blue Devil history to reach the 50-hit plateau. Herrmann's 13 doubles were one shy of the school record. He was also the Devils' top RBI man with 28.

As strong as his offensive numbers were, Herrmann made his mark with defense. He caught all but two innings in conference play this year, and threw out an amazing 74.3 percent of baserunners, gunning down 18 in 28 attempts.

"Rob was a special player, one of the best in the history of our program," said head coach Matt Palisin. "He had all the intangibles and went out of his way to take the burden of leadership on his shoulders all year long. Our pitchers loved throwing to him."

Herrmann finishes his career ranking among the Devils' leader in numerous categories: doubles (first, 32); hits (second, 152); runs (third, 75) and batting average (sixth, .370).

Kirsch leaves an equally stellar resume. He led the Devils with a .451 average -- third best in school history and second in the conference this year -- and topped the team in hits (51), triples (6) and runs (30). His career average now stands at .38888, second all time, just .00036 points behind Joe Caso's career mark of .38924.

Kirsch's 140 career hits also rank fourth in the team's history.

Kirsch was recognized in 2008 as the New York State Gold Glove winner for third base, and was one of the top defensive players in all of Division III.

"Donnie was the ultimate ballplayer," said Palisin. "He brought it everyday in practice and his motor never stopped. Just to have other players watch and learn from his example will have a lasting impact on our team for years. Donnie was as humble of a player as there is and he played the game the way it was meant to be."

"Both Don and Rob put up numbers on the field and both are outstanding students. They are also two of the most respectable individuals I have come across. It was a pleasure to work with them the past four seasons."
