FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Jesse Grespan (Toronto, Ont.) scored two goals to lead the York Lions to a 4-2 victory over the Fredonia State Blue Devils in an exhibition game Tuesday at the Steele Hall Ice Arena.
The Lions took a 2-0 lead on first-period goals by Robert Groom (Thunder Bay, Ont.) and Chris Jones (Grafton, Ont.) before Grespan scored the eventual game-winning goal on a power play at 2:07 of the second period.
Grespan scored a second power-play goal later in the second period sandwiched between Blue Devil goals by Bryan Ross (Livonia, Mich.) and Billy Sanborn (Monroe, N.Y.). Forced to kill three penalties in the third period, the Blue Devils were unable to mount any more of a threat. They finished 5 of 7 on the penalty kill and 0 of 2 on the power play.
Kody VanRentergem (Leduc, Alberta) made 27 saves. David Blair (Ajax, Ont.) made 21 stops for York.
The Blue Devils remain at Steele Hall for a pair of games this weekend against Western New England -- 7 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday. Western New England's first-year head coach Greg Heffernan spent the previous three seasons at a Blue Devil assistant coach.
