FREDONIA, N.Y. -- USA Hockey's Under-18 team jumped to an early lead and never looked back Tuesday in downing Fredonia State, 6-1, in an exhibition game at Steele Hall.
Team USA's Matt Nieto (Long Beach, Calif.) scored at 1:15 of the first period and his team never trailed the rest of the way.
Goals by A.J. Treais (Bloomfield, Mich.), John Henrion (Holden, Mass.), and Kenny Ryan (Franklin, Mich.) pushed Team USA's advantage to 4-0 at the end of one period.
Chris McCarthy (Collegeville, Pa.) made it 5-0 before the Blue Devils broke through with a power-play goal. Sophomore forward Alex Morton (Cannington, Ont.) scored his fourth goal of the season just 11 seconds into the power play to cut the margin to 5-1. Sophomore defenseman Steve Rizer (Smithtown) picked up the lone assist.
The Blue Devils appeared to score a second goal moments later, only to have the tally waved off due to a tripping penalty.
Henrion's second goal of the night completed the scoring with 19 seconds left in the game.
His team outshot in the game 44-13, Fredonia State junior goaltender Pat Street (Annapolis, Md.) came up with 38 saves. Team USA's Adam Murray (Anchorage, Alaska) made 12 saves.
