FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State Blue Devils have to figure out a way to score some goals this weekend. For starters, they'll have to do it against the nation's No. 1 ranked Division III team.

The Plattsburgh Cardinals (12-1-2, 7-0-1 SUNYAC) make their annual visit to the Steele Hall Ice Arena for a 7 p.m. faceoff Friday. The pre-season pick to win the SUNYAC title, the Cardinals so far have lived up to the pre-season accolades. They received 13 of the 20 first-place votes in the latest USCHO.com poll.

The Blue Devils (4-9-3, 2-4-2 SUNYAC), on the other hand, have lost seven straight games, including two exhibitions against the U.S. Under-18 national team. Their last win came Nov. 21, a 5-0 home win over Morrisville State. They have not scored more than three goals in any of the eight game since then.

"I don't think that it is any secret," assistant coach Greg Heffernan said, "that we have had trouble finding the back of the net recently. That being said, we need to find a way to overcome our drought and produce this weekend."

Despite their recent troubles, the Blue Devils are still in the SUNYAC playoff hunt. They enter the weekend tied with the Potsdam Bears for seventh place, but only two points out of fourth. The top six teams make the conference tournament.

In a meeting with large playoff implications, the Blue Devils and Bears square off at Steele at 7 p.m. Saturday.

"Our conference is so tight," Heffernan said. "Two points separates (us from) home ice in the playoffs (versus) working on our golf game. We need to be focused and ready to compete for 60 minutes both nights this weekend."

The Steele Hall ticket office opens 6 p.m. each night.
