FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State took command with two goals late in the first period en route to a 5-2 victory Friday over Westfield State at the Steele Hall Ice Arena.

Goals by Bryan Ross (Livonia, Mich.) and Steve Rizer (Smithtown, N.Y.) pushed the Blue Devil advantage out to 3-0 after one period.

Rizer also scored a short-handed goal late in the second period, his sixth goal of the season. Mat Hehr (Sherwood Park, Alberta) and Jeff Aonso (Toronto, Ont.) had the other Blue Devil tallies. Hehr's goal was his 10th of the season, tying him for the team lead.

Fredonia State improved to a 10-4-0 while Westfield State dropped to 6-3-2. Dennis Zak (Dover, N.J.) scored both Owl goals during the second period.

The Blue Devils outshot their guests, 52-20, with Kody VanRentergem (Leduc, Alberta) making 18 saves for the victory. It was the first meeting ever between the two teams.

The teams meet again Saturday afternoon at the Steele Hall Ice Arena. Game time is 3 p.m.
