CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Fredonia State dropped its season-opening game, 5-2, to Cortland on the first day of the annual SUNYAC Challenge.
Cortland's Greg Haney scored at 8:44 of the second period to break a 2-2 tie. Ryan Markell scored an insurance goal on a power-play later in the second period before Bryan Elfant scored into an empty net with five seconds left.
Fredonia State never led in the game but tied the score twice. Freshman forward Bryan Ross (Livonia, Mich.) scored a goal in his first collegiate game to knot the score 1-1 at 15:07 of the first period. Then down 2-1, sophomore forward Alex Morton (Cannington, Ont.) tallied on a Blue Devil power play at 6:04 of the second period. It was their own power-play conversion in six man-up opportunities.
Junior goalkeeper Pat Street (Annapolis, Md.) made 30 saves in the Blue Devil net. Three Cortland goalkeepers combined for 44 saves as the Blue Devils outshot their hosts, 46-35.
The Blue Devils are back in action 2 p.m. Saturday when they face Buffalo State, which lost to Geneseo, 2-1, in the earlier game Friday at Cortland.
