(CORTLAND 7, FREDONIA STATE 5)

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State dropped its SUNYAC and home opener Friday, 7-5, to the Cortland Red Dragons.

The Blue Devils trailed 3-1 after the first period and 6-2 after the second before outscoring the Red Dragons 3-1 in the third period.

Junior forward Jordan Oye (Richmond, B.C.) scored two of the third-period goals and freshman defense Brad Nunn (Stony Brook, N.Y.) had the other, his first as a collegian. Freshman forward Mitch Kulikoski (Calgary, Alberta) assisted on all three and freshman forward Mat Hehr (Sherwood Park, Alberta) set up Oye both times.

Freshman forward Nick Simson (Lackawanna, N.Y.) scored his first collegiate goal, a power-play conversion which forged a 1-1 tie at 10:50 of the first period. The Red Dragons responded with five unanswered goals, three on power plays. The Blue Devils yielded four power-play goals overall, three of them in the first period.

Senior forward James Muscatello (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) had the second Blue Devil goal to make the score 5-2 at the time.

Senior forward Patrick Palmisano (Ann Arbor, Mich.) had two goals and two assists for the Red Dragons. Junior forward Jarret Gold (East Setauket, N.Y.) and sophomore forward Jake Saville (Bellingham, Wash.) each had one goal and three assists.

Fredonia State had a 49-46 advantage in shots. Sophomore goaltender Mike Reilly (New York City) made 44 saves. Fredonia State used two goaltenders.

The loss dropped the Blue Devils to 1-2 overall while the Red Dragons improved to 1-1.

Fredonia State is back at home 7 p.m. Saturday vs. Oswego.
