(BOX SCORE: Geneseo 6, Fredonia State 5 -- OT)

FREDONIA, N.Y. --  Geneseo's Andrew Rygiel (Toronto, Ont.) scored 46 seconds into  overtime to down Fredonia State, 6-5, in the Blue Devils' final game of the season.

The Blue Devils (6-13-5, 4-8-4) entered the game with a chance to still make the SUNYAC Tournament with a win and a Buffalo State loss. Instead, the opposite occured in each case -- the Bengals defeated Brockport -- and left Fredonia State out of the conference tournament for only the third time in head coach Jeff Meredith's 21 seasons.

Geneseo controlled the play most of the first period, outshot the Blue Devils 13-3, but only had a 1-0 lead to show for their work. Casey Smith (Fairport) put the Ice Knights on the board at 3:38 of the period with a hard, low shot from the left circle through a screen.

The second period was a wide-open affair. First, the Blue Devils drew even on a goal by Alex Morton (Cannington, Ont.) at 3:52, then Steve Rizer (Smithtown) gave the Blue Devils their first lead with a shot into the short side. Geneseo countered with a power-play goal by Daniel Sullivan (Ottawa, Ont.) to tie the game at 2-2. Rizer put Fredonia State back in front, 3-2, with a steal in the neutral zone leading to an unassisted goal. Geneseo regained the momentum before the period ended with a goal by Jeff MacPhee (Calgary, Alberta) through a maze of players in front of Fredonia State freshman goaltender Kody Van Rentergem (Leduc, Alberta).

Geneseo carried the momentum into the third period and wasted no time taking a 4-3 lead when Jonathan Redlick scored 19 seconds in. The Blue Knights then earned themselves some breathing room - but only briefly - on a goal by Clint Olson (Clearwater, N.B.) with 2:27 left to take a 5-3 lead. The Blue Devils won the ensuing faceoff and were in the process of pulling their goaltender in favor of an extra attacker when junior Jeff Aonso (Toronto, Ont.) scored to make it 5-4. The Blue Devils eventually pulled Van Rentergem and freshman Bryan Ross (Livonia, Mich.) scored the game-tying goal with :06 left to force the overtime.

In addition to the 11 goals that were scored, each team had a goal taken away - Geneseo on a slapshot in the second period, the Blue Devils midway with 6:52 left in the third period when the officials ruled the net was knocked loose before the puck cross the goal line.

Geneseo finished with a 37-28 advantage in shots. Van Rentergem made 31 saves while Geneseo's Cory Gerschon (Spring Valley) made 23 stops.

The game marked the final time in a Blue Devil uniform for four seniors: Jeff Sylvester (Windsor, Ont.), Richard Boyce (Mississaugua, Ont.), Bryan Goudy (Port Huron, Mich.), and Matt McKeown (Niagara Falls, Ont.). Those four and fellow senior Colin Sarfeh (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) were honored during a pre-game ceremony. Sarfeh missed most of the second semester following season-ending shoulder surgery.
