FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State opened its 2009 season with a 16-1 victory over Hartwick College at University Stadium.
Freshman attacker Amy Simon (Amherst) had five goals and one assist to lead the Blue Devil offense. Her first goal of the game, at 6:22 of the first half, proved to be the game-winner.
Freshman attacker Morgan McNamara (Oswego) had three goals, including the Blue Devils' first goal of the season :46 seconds into the game. Sophomore attacker Laura Culhane (Rochester/Gates-Chili) added two goals and three assists, and sophomore attacker Emily Fink (Penfield) also had two goals.
Freshman goalkeeper Nicole Faulise (Buffalo/Mount St. Mary) was called on to make just one save in her collegiate debut. A goal by Hartwick's Grace Coppola (Scotia/Scotia-Glenville) at 3:38 of the first half was the only mark against Faulise's ledger. The loss dropped the Hawks to 0-2.
The Blue Devils play their next two games at the Spring Fling in West Palm Beach, Fla. -- March 13 vs. Curry, and March 18 vs. Keene State. Their next home game is March 27 vs. Wooster.
