FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Geneseo claimed the final SUNYAC women's lacrosse playoff spot with a 12-8 win over Fredonia State in the rain Tuesday at University Stadium.

Abby Hungerford (Syracuse/Corcoran) led the Geneseo attack with four goals while Maggie Morris (Massapequa) had three goals and two assists for the Blue Knights (10-5, 6-3), who'll face No. 1 seed Buffalo State on the Bengals' home field 12:30 p.m. Friday in first game of the SUNYAC Tournament. Oneonta and Cortland meet in the other semifinal. The championship game is 1 p.m. Saturday.

The Blue Devils (10-7, 4-5 SUNYAC) needed a win by at least four goals, or a win by less than four and a Brockport loss to Oswego to claim the fourth seed. But Geneseo's Hungerford was having nothing of it. She scored her team's first three goals, two in the span of 17 seconds. Her first goal opened the scoring and Amy Simon (Amherst) answered for the Blue Devils at the 2:22 mark. Hungerford's second goal, at 3:27, put Geneseo ahead for keeps, and her free-position tally at 3:44 pushed the advantage out to two.

The Blue Devils fell behind by three goals on a goal by Geneseo's Lauren Burgoon (Syracuse/West Genesee) at 8:39, then by four goals when Tara Murphy (St. James/Smithtown) found the net at 13:09. Fredonia State cut its deficit twice to two goals but could get no closer and trailed 9-4 at halftime. Geneseo goalkeeper Hannah McKee (Ithaca) had six saves overall, three in each half.

Simon and Katie Monaghan (Fairport) finished with two goals each for Fredonia State while Morgan McNamara (Oswego) and Laura Culhane (Rochester/Gates-Chili) had one goal and one assist each. Simon's two goals added to her single-season school record total. She scored 54 goals this spring as a freshman.

Blue Devil goalkeeper Nicole Faulise (Buffalo/Mount St. Mary) was credited with three saves. Top field players were Megan Mietelski (Fairport) with four ground balls and four draw controls, and Valerie Snider (Spencerport) with five ground balls.

Prior to the game, lone Blue Devil senior Stephanie Maderer (Orchard Park) was recognized for her four years of participation in the program.
