BOX SCORE: BLUE DEVILS 70, NEW PALTZ 59
NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -- Fredonia State’s Brad Cooper (Monticello) nailed a jumper at 8:04 of the second half to give the Blue Devils a 50-48 lead that they would not relinquish, en route to a 70-59 SUNYAC road victory.
The Devils scored first and led the entire first half. They held a 30-23 advantage at the break.
They would maintain the lead until a pair of free throw from New Paltz’s Pete Carmel put the Hawks up 45-44 with 11:07 remaining. The lead would be short lived, with Cooper’s jumper three minutes later erasing the Hawks lead for good.
James Kane (Buffalo/Bishop Timon) and Cooper led a balanced Blue Devil attack with 14 points each. Kane also added 14 rebounds. Greg MacBride (Clifton Springs/Newark) had 12 points and Julius Bryant (Buffalo/Hutch Tech) chipped in 11 and six rebounds. The fifth Blue Devil starter, Kevin Saunders (Batavia), added nine points.
New Paltz was led by Harris Wichard with 18 points, five rebounds and three steals. Jayquan Anderson chipped in with 15 points. New Paltz falls to 7-6 overall, and 3-4 in the conference.
The Devils improve to 6-5 overall and 4-1 in the SUNYAC. They play host to Brockport on Tuesday.
