FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State hung on for a 76-74 SUNYAC win when a last-second desperation shot by Potsdam missed the mark.
A three-point basket by Skip Schwartz (Pittsford/Pittsford-Mendon) with :10 left cut the Blue Devil lead to 76-74. A Fredonia State turnover under the Potsdam basket gave the visitors one last chance. The clock ran down while the team scrambled for the ball before a three-point attempt by Benjamin Walker (New Smyrna Beach, Fla.) fell short as time expired.
The victory included a milestone night by Fredonia State senior guard Brad Cooper (Monticello). With a basket late in the first half, he became the 15th Blue Devil to score 1,000 points in his collegiate career. He finished with 23 points and moved past Jamie Eichel (1,001 points) and Keith Stiles (1,015) and just behind Neil Postman (1,017) on the all-time chart.
The Blue Devils had three others players in double figures. Julius Bryant (Buffalo/Hutch Tech) added 12 while reserves Amir Billups (Buffalo/Starpoint) and Jonathan Herrera (Woodside/Flushing) had 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Anthony Williams Jr. (Brentwood/Upper Room Christian Academy) led the Bears with 26 points and 10 rebounds, but only five points and three rebounds in the second half. Curtis Pierce (Brooklyn/George Westinghouse) added 14 points and Joshua Lambert (Brooklyn/East New York Transit) added 11.
The Blue Devils improved to 4-4 overall and 2-0 in the SUNYAC while the Bears fell to 1-7 and 0-3.
Fredonia State returns to action Saturday at 4 p.m. vs. Plattsburgh at Steele Hall, while Potsdam moves on to face Buffalo State.
