NEWARK, N.J. -- Fredonia State opened its regular season with a 64-55 victory over Allegheny at the John K. Adams Tip-Off Classic at Rutgers-Newark.
The Blue Devils pulled away in the final three minutes, led by senior guard Wayne Davis (Binghamton), who finished with 12 points. Junior guard Brad Cooper (Monticello) led the Blue Devils with 17 points.
With the Blue Devils trailing 55-53, Davis tied the score with a jumpshot, put his team ahead with a pair of free throws, and completed his one-man seven-point run with a three-point basket to expand the Blue Devil lead to 60-55 with 2:26 remaining.
Cooper closed out the scoring with four free throws in the final minunte. On the defensive end, Fredonia State held the Gators (0-1) without a point over the final 3:52.
The Blue Devils will play for the tournament title 4 p.m. Sunday against either Medgar Evers or host Rutgers-Newark.
