FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State men's basketball had one of its most dominating games in recent history, defeating SUNY Cobleskill 71-26 in Dods Hall on Saturday evening.
The Devils held Cobleskill (0-3) to just 3 points in the first half, buidling a 37-3 lead. The Devils scored the game's first 17 points. Fredonia State's pressure defense forced 20 turnovers in the frame. Kevin Saunders (Batavia) led all scorers with 9 points at the break.
In the second half, the Devils led by as many as 48 points. Thirteen Devils figured in the scoring column, with Saunder's 15 leading the way. Scott Valenta (Binghamton) had 12 points, and Bryan Morse (Beacon) chipped in 10 off the bench. Julius Bryant (Buffalo/Hutch Tech) pulled down nine boards.
Cobleskill was led by Taiquan Newkirk with five points and four rebounds.
The Devils defensive efforts were aided by 26 Cobleskill turnovers for the game, and the Tigers shot eight of 24 (25%) from the free throw line.
The Devils held a 37-26 rebounding. They shot 5 of 11 from three-point range, and were 6 of 12 from the charity stripe.
The Devils improve to 3-1 on the season. They travel to D'Youville on Tuesday for a womens'/men's doubleheader at 6 and 8 p.m.
