Men's basketball

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Houghton College downed the Fredonia State men's basketball team, 63-57, in a non-conference matchup Tuesday evening in Dods Hall.

The Devils opened the game with a three pointer by Kevin Saunders (Batavia). Houghton would answer with a field goal and a three pointer of its own to take a lead it would not relinquish the rest of the game.

The Highlanders would lead 31-25 at the half, thanks in large part to six-of-eight shooting from beyond the arc. Devin Paige had 15 points, and Ryan Shay had 12 at the break.

Saunders had eight first-half markers to pace the Devils.

Fredonia State opened up the second half with an 8-2 run, to pull within a point, 34-33. Houghton responded with 10 consecutive points to regain command of the game, giving them a 44-33 lead.

The Highlanders would finish the game scoring 15 of its last 17 points from the charity stripe. For the game, they shot 26 of 38 (68.4 percent) from the line.

The Devils were 13 of 15 (87.5 percent) from the line. They held a 28-22 advantage in rebounds.

Julius Bryant (Buffalo/Hutch Tech) led the Devils with 16 points. Wayne Davis (Binghamton) and Saunders had 11 apiece.

For Houghton, Shay led all scorers with 19 points. Yannick Anzuluni  had 18 and Paige added 17.

Houghton improves to 8-13.

The Devils, 13-8 overall, are idle this weekend. They travel to Buffalo State next Tuesday.
