FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State men's basketball team downed New Paltz, 67-62, in overtime to claim a SUNYAC victory on Friday.
The Devils led by as many as 17 in the first half, and would eventually settle into a 39-25 advantage at the break.
New Paltz opened the second half scoring the first 11 points, to cut the Devils' lead to 39-36. From there, they crept back into the game, forging a 50-all tie with 2:51 left to play.
The Hawks would eventually go up four, 54-50, with 1:45 left to play. The Devils closed regulation, scoring their final four points from the fre-throw line.
New Paltz struck first in overtime, with a Pete Carmel layup to take a 56-54 lead. The Devils' Greg MacBride scored the game's next five points to put the Devils back in the lead, 59-56.
After a pair of free throws by Harris Wichard, the Hawks pulled within a point, 59-58.
The Devils then used a pair of longballs by Amir Billups and Joseph Monahan to build a seven-point lead, 65-58, and ice the game with 45 seconds left to play. Both teams scored two more points to give the 67-62 final.
The Devils improve to 9-11 overall, and 7-7 in the SUNYAC. Billups finished with 12 to lead the Devils. Julius Bryant had 11 points and 12 rebounds.
New Paltz falls to 11-11, and 7-8 in the conference.Wichard's 13 led a quartet of Hawks in double digits.
