(BOX SCORE: Fredonia State 64, Geneseo 59)
FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State men's basketball team defeated Geneseo 64-59 in front of 913 raucous fans on Sportsmanship Night at Steele Hall on Friday.
The victory over the SUNYAC's current No. 1 seed moved the Devils one step closer to getting a home game in the first round of the SUNYAC playoffs on Tuesday, Feb. 24. They will need some help, though. They will need Buffalo State to lose to Cortland, and win Saturday vs. Cortland to accomplish that. As of press time, no results were in from Friday's Oswego-Buffalo State game.
The see-saw game featured 10 lead changes and six ties. Neither team held a lead larger than six points at any point during the game.
Brad Cooper (Monticello) led the Devil offense with 18 points. Leonard Smith (Brooklyn/Nazareth Regional) chipped in 12 off the bench, while Bryan Morse (Beacon) added six points and a game high 10 rebounds.
Geneseo was led by Jeff Howe's 13 points, and Brandon Simpson's 11.
The Knights led 28-25 at halftime.
Despite the loss, Geneseo's Howe reached the 1,000-point plateau at 12:21 on the second half on a free throw.
Geneseo falls to 17-7 overall, and 11-4 in the SUNYAC.
The Devils improve to 15-8 overall, and 9-6 in the conference. Saturday's game vs. Cortland is slated for 4 p.m.
