ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Fredonia State battled back into the game, then hit a cold spell down the stretch and lost to Hartwick, 52-50, Friday night in the ECAC Upstate New York Tournament.

Trailing 40-29 early in the second half, the Blue Devils (18-10) fashioned a 15-2 run to take a 44-42 lead on basket by senior Bryan Morse (Beacon) with 7:46 remaining. Over the next seven minutes, the Blue Devils had no field goals and only two free throws -- yet did not trail by more than three points at any point during the cold spell.

A basket by junior Brad Cooper (Monticello) forged a 47-47 tie with :51 remaining. A three-point basket by Hartwick's A.J. Beaulieu proved to be a decisive basket for it gave the Hawks a 50-47 lead. The Blue Devils cut their deficit to two points twice thereafter, the final time with :03 left on a free throw by senior Wayne Davis (Binghamton). The Blue Devils had one last possession but a shot by Cooper missed with :01 to go.

Junior Greg MacBride (Clifton Springs/Newark) led the Blue Devils with 10 points while Cooper and junior Scott Valenta (Binghamton) added nine points each. MacBride and Valenta did all of their scoring in the first half.

Morse and Davis were playing in their final games for the Blue Devils.

The game was played at St. John Fisher College, where the host Cardinals defeated Oswego, 72-71, earlier Friday. Fisher and Hartwick will meet Saturday starting at 2 p.m. for the ECAC Upstate New York title.
