POTSDAM, N.Y. -- Fredonia State remained in the hunt for a SUNYAC Tournament playoff spot with a 1-0 victory Friday night over the Potsdam Bears.
Junior forward Peter Dagel (Rochester/Gates Chili) scored his sixth goal of the season with 5:14 remaining. A long pass behind the defense by sophomore forward Cory Paine (Ontario/Wayne) went to junior forward John Grabowski (Middleport/Roy-Hart), who one-timed a pass into the box. Dagel ran across the set to the ball and one-time his shot into the net.
Senior goalkeeper Thom Cavanaugh (Slingerlands/Voorhesville) made eight saves to earn his fourth shutout of the season, his third in the last five games.
The Blue Devils improved to 2-1-2 in the SUNYAC and 6-4-3 overall. They entered play Friday two points out of the sixth and final playoff spot, a spot held by Cortland. The Red Dragons were also in action Friday night, at home against Geneseo.
Fredonia State stays in north country for its Saturday game, a 2 p.m. kickoff at Plattsburgh. The Cardinals were co-leaders in the SUNYAC with a 4-1-1 conference mark heading into their Friday night game at home against Buffalo State.
The loss dropped Potdsam to 1-6-0 and 3-10-1.
