PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- Fredonia State ran into the SUNYAC leaders Saturday afternoon and fell 3-0 to the Plattsburgh Cardinals.
Goals by Matt Hamilton, Pat Shaughnessy, and Joe Griffin supported the goalkeeping of Andy Heighington, who was not required to make a save in order to post the shutout. The Cardinals improved to 6-1-1 in the SUNYAC and 11-2-2 overall.
The lost was the first by Fredonia State since a 1-0 setback Sept. 25 to Oneonta. The Blue Devils were 3-0-2 in the previous five games. They fell to 2-2-2 in the conference and 6-5-3 overall.
The Blue Devils were outshot 18-4, with none of their shots getting through to Heighington. At the other end, senior goalkeeper Thom Cavanaugh (Slingerlands/Voorheesville) made seven saves.
The Blue Devils are back in action 3 p.m. Tuesday vs. New Paltz at Cortland, a game previously scheduled for Sept. 26 at Fredonia. It match was declared a "No Contest" less than two minutes short of regulation with the Blue Devils leading 2-0.
