FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State and Cortland played to a scoreless double-overtime tie Friday night at University Stadium

Fredonia State senior Thom Cavanaugh (Slingerlands/Voorheesville) made six saves while Cortland sophomore Erik Shum (Carmel/Kennedy) stopped 10 shots. Each keeper made two saves during the overtimes.

The Blue Devils are 4-4-3 overall and 0-1-2 in the SUNYAC while the Red Dragons are 2-7-2 and 1-2-1 in the conference.

Shum kept the game scoreless in the first half when he rushed off the goal line and smothered a shot by Peter Dagel (Rochester/Gates-Chili) as Dagel hurried to get off a shot at the 18-yard-line.

Shum came up big in the second half, too. A cross into the box set up junior Eli Lubberts (Ontario/Wayne) for a diving header. Shum made a sprawling save to keep the game scoreless.

With just over four minutes left, Cortland's Harald Gracholski (Memmel, Germany/Hermano Zudermano) was on the receiving end of a perfect set-up into the box. Gracholski's one-timer sailed just over the top of the crossbar.

Gracholski had another chance, not nearly as dangerous, with just over one minute left in regulation, while Fredonia State sophomore Justin Gmeinwiser (Rochester/Rush-Henrietta) nearly scored on a deflected shot from the top of the box in the final seconds.

Fredonia State junior Jack Flechaus (Brockport) had the best scoring chance of the first overtime when he skipped a shot off the wet grass which Shum cradled.

Midway through the second overtime, Cavanaugh caught and covered a low, hard blast by Cortland's Ben Rowell (Stracuse/East Syracuse-Minoa). Minutes later, Cavanaugh grabbed a blast from farther out by Evan Waggoner (Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse).

It was Cavanaugh's second shutout of the season. He lowered his goals-against average to 0.95.

The Red Dragons won a penalty-kick shootout, 5-4, used for SUNYAC tiebreaking purpose.

The Blue Devils are back in SUNYAC action Saturday afternoon against Oswego. Kickoff is 2 p.m.
