FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State's attempt to close the 2008 season with an upset of No. 4 Hobert was a case of too little, too late.
The Blue Devils (9-9-0) spotted the Statesmen (16-0-2) a 3-0 lead before scoring twice in the second half in an eventual 3-2 loss at University Stadium.
Freshman forward Matt Grabowski (Victor) scored in the 66th minute, and senior midfielder Chris Huber (Horseheads) closed out his collegiate career with a goal in the 77th minute, but Fredonia State was unable to score the equalizer. Freshman midfielder Cory Paine (Ontario/Wayne) assisted on both of the goals. Sophomore forward-defender Peter Dagel (Rochester/Gates Chili) also helped set up Huber.
Hobart led 2-0 at halftime on goals by Phillip Schoeniger and Tommy Hayes. Schoeniger scored just 4:55 into the game when he sailed a left-footed shot into the top right corner of the net after taking a short pass from Matt Schwartz in the midfield following a Blue Devil turnover. The goal by Hayes came from the right wing in the 17th minute. He received a pass from a teammate, dribbled between two Blue Devil defenders, and scored on a low shot into the right corner of the net.
The Statesmen added to their lead in the 54th minute on a goal by Dan Riso, from Micheal Moulton and Anthony Rozmus. Riso's goal goes down as the game-winner.
Senior goalkeeper Andrew Feldmann (Silver Creek) got the start for the Blue Devils and finished with five saves. He, Huber, and two other seniors, defenders Scott Chimileski (Horseheads) and Sam Stewart (Jamestown), were recognized during a pre-game ceremony.
Head coach P.J. Gondek also mentioned Jason Januskiewiczy during his pre-game remarks. Confined to in a wheelchair following a 2005 auto accident, Januskiewiczy continues to rehab in a Boston, Mass., facility. "Today would have been Jason's Senior Day," Gondek said. "He remains in our thoughts and prayers."
