FREDONIA, N.Y -- Fredonia State won its own home men's soccer tournament Saturday with a 2-1 victory over Penn State Behrend.
Brett Wysocki (Gansevoort/Columbia) scored in 58th minute to break a 1-1 tie and earn the Blue Devils (2-3-0) the 2009 Clarion Hotel Soccer Classic title. Wysocki gathered in a loose ball after a scramble at the top of the box. It was his first goal of the season.
Fredonia State rallied from a 1-0 deficit on a pretty tic-tac-toe connection in the 25th minute. A indirect free kick by Eli Lubberts (Ontario/Wayne) went to Cory Paine (Ontario/Wayne) to the left of the goal. Paine headed the ball to Stephen Ahern (Nottingham. U.K./Billborough), who in turn headed the ball into the net.
The Lions (3-1-1) broke on top in the 19th minute on a goal by Aaron Meehl (North East, Pa.). A free kick started the play and Meehl finished it with a turn and shot from the top of the 18 which glanced off the Fredonia State goalkeeper.
Bobby McGinnis (Elmira) earned the victory in net for the Blue Devils in relief of Thom Cavanaugh (Slingerlands/Voorheesville). McGinnis made two saves in 70 minutes of duty.
In the third-place game played earlier Saturday, Buffalo State rolled over St. Joseph's College, 5-2. Derrek Basile (Pennellville/Birdlebough) had two goals and one assist for the Bengals (3-3-0). Tony Schiappa (Amherst/Williamsville East), Zack Eastman (Lakeview/Lake Shore), and Mike Hart (Baldwin Place/Somers) had one goal each. Adam Rogers (Hauppauge) and Stephen Zaech (Farmingdale/Sachem East) scored for St. Joseph's (1-4-0).
