Grantham, Pa. -- The Fredonia State men’s soccer team fell to the defending National Champion Messiah College, 5-1, on Friday night.

Messiah took a 3-0 lead in the first half. They scored six-and-a-half minutes into the game as Danny Thompson scored an unassisted goal.

Nick Thompson converted on a penalty kick 17:09 into the game. The hosts capped their first-half scoring with Dan Squire knocking in a Geoff Pezon crossing pass for their third score.

The Devils got on the board in the second half, as senior Ryan O’Donnell (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) scored his first goal of the season on a breakaway at the 56:01 mark.

Two more Messiah goals in the 68th and 73rd minutes gave the final.

Messiah out-shot the Devils, 13-4, and held a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Junior Bobby McGinnis (Elmira/Elmira Free Academy) played the first half in goal for the Devils, allowing three scores. Freshman Eddie Bower (Holley/Holley) was the netminder the second half, letting in two goals.

The Devils (0-2) will play host to No. 25 Medaille at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at University Stadium in their home opener.
