GRANTHAM, Pa. -- Fredonia State's bid to upset defending national champ Messiah fell short Saturday with a 3-0 loss.

Messiah's Nick Thompson scored in the 60th minute to open the scoring.

Now forced to score the equalizer, the Blue Devils (0-3) began to force the play but were unable to mount a serious threat.

Instead, the Falcons (2-0) created several more scoring chances. Tom Renko made it 2-0 later in the half, while Danny Thompson scored in the 89th minute to complete the scoring.

The Blue Devils had only two shots in the game, one in the final minute.

After three road games to open the season, the Blue Devils return home for their next three games. They will meet St. Joseph's of Long Island at 7 p.m. Friday as part of the Clarion Hotel Soccer Classic at University Stadium.
