FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Nationally ranked Medaille improved to 3-1 with a 3-2 overtime victory over Fredonia State in men's soccer Wednesday night at University Stadium.
George Tor (Lagos, Nigeria) scored the game-winning goal in the 97th minute. It was his second goal of the game. He also had an assist.
Fredonia State trailed 2-0 before scoring both its goals in the final four minutes of regulation.
Jake Persons (East Greenbush/Columbia) scored his first collegiate goal to cut the Medaille lead in half. Persons headed in a direct kick from Luke Spencer (Rochester/West Irondequoit) at 86:18.
The Blue Devils continued to put on the pressure. Rejean Archambeault (Horseheads) fired just over the crossbar from point-blank range in the 88th minute.
A Medaille foul just inside the set up the equalizer. Ryan O'Donnell (Orchard Park) converted a penalty kick with 11 seconds remaining and set up a wild celebration among Fredonia State faithful. It was O'Donnell's second goal of the season.
Medaille scored the game-winner at 96:23. A cross out of the corner by Corey Phillips (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) was batted by Fredonia State freshman goalkeeper Eddie Bower II (Holley). The ball appeared to deflect off the crossbar and onto the foot of Tor, whose short chip was true. It was his team-high fourth goal of the season.
The loss dropped the Blue Devils to 0-3.Medaille led at halftime, 1-0, when Tor scored after receiving a long through pass from Alexander Rouse (Marcellus) at 28:10. The Mavericks outshot the Blue Devils, 8-6, in the half.
Tor assisted on a goal by John Taggart (Tonawanda) at 48:55 of the second half.
Medaille goalkeeper Ryan Goettel (Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) went untested for a good portion of the game before the Blue Devils turned up the head. He finished with two saves.
Fredonia State's Bobby McGinnis (Elmira/Elmira Free) stopped five shots before giving way to Bower in the 72nd minute. Bower was the goalkeeper of record, his first collegiate decision.
The Blue Devils place twice at home this weekend in the Clarion Hotel Classic -- 7 p.m. Friday vs. Baldwin-Wallace, 5 p.m. Saturday vs. John Carroll. The Fredonia State women are also home both days.
