FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Three Fredonia State student-athletes have won SUNYAC weekly honors, it was announced Monday.

Kelly Sponholz (Alden) and Christian Torres (Dunkirk) were named SUNYAC Female and SUNYAC Male Divers of the Week, respectively. Julia Hopson (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) is the SUNYAC Women's Field Athlete of the Week.

All three were also named Fredonia State athletes of the week.

Sponholz, a senior, posted four wins in two meets last week. In all four cases, she posted NCAA Division III provisional-qualifying scores. She also set pool records at Hartwick College -- 279.95 points in 1-meter springboard diving, 301.10 in the 3-meter.

Torres, a junior, was victorious three times in two meets last week. His two wins at Hartwick were provisional-qualifying scores. With a score of 311.65 points in the 1-meter, he set a new Fredonia State school record -- breaking the record of three-time All-American Scott Horsington -- as well as a Hartwick pool record.

Hopson, a senior thrower/sprinter, was the top collegian in the 20-pound weight throw and the shot put Jan. 24 at the Mary Phillips Open inside the Steele Hall Fieldhouse. Her weight throw of 16.75 meters provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Division III championships and was only 25 centimeters short of the automatic-qualifying standard. Hopson finished second in both events to Olympic Trials competitor Adriane Blewitt.
