Weekend preview
FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Two fall teams have road trips this weekend and for the rest of this season.
The women's soccer team plays its first of five remaining road games Friday at Plattsburgh, followed by a trip to Potsdam for a game there Saturday afternoon. Meanwhile, the men's and women's cross country teams will compete Saturday at the University of Rochester Yellowjacket Cross Country Invitational.
For the soccer team, this weekend has important playoff implications. The Blue Devils (8-4-1, 2-3-0 SUNYAC) are chasing four teams ahead of them for the last three SUNYAC playoff spots. "Plattsburgh (11-2-1, 5-2-0 SUNYAC) is a team that is very tough at home and we have only won once up there in the history of our program," head coach Chris Case said. "We have had some close games with them the past few years and I would assume this will be the same."
Case will be counting on his defense to continue its recent solid play -- it has allowed one goal in the last four games -- while he will look for his offense to pick up the pace. The game at Plattsburgh will be the Blue Devils' first this season on artificial turf. It'll also be the Cardinals' homecoming weekend.
"We will need to do a much better job of finishing our chances," Case said. "Plattsburgh does not give up much defensively and Potsdam (7-5-2, 0-5-1 SUNYAC) will play a defensive system and look to counter."
Cross country's regular-season concludes with its race Saturday at Genesee Valley Park, a fast course when dry. The rest of the season will consist of championship meets -- the SUNYAC meet Nov. 1, the NCAA Atlantic Regional Nov. 15, and the NCAA meet for qualifiers Nov. 22.
