Weekend preview

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Both Fredonia State basketball teams and the men's hockey team close out their regular seasons at home this weekend. Two will be playing to get into the post-season, while the other will be hoping to improve its SUNYAC Tournament seed.

For the women's basketball team, the task at clear-cut if not easy -- win twice or call it a season. The Blue Devils, at 3-11 in the SUNYAC, are chasing Geneseo (4-10) and Buffalo State (4-11) for the eighth and final playoff spot. Geneseo provides the opposition 6 p.m. Friday inside Steele Hall, so the Blue Devils must win in order to extend their playoff hopes into Saturday, when they face conference-leading Cortland (13-1) at 2 p.m.

The men's basketball team is guaranteed a spot in the SUNYAC Tournament, but its playoff seed must still be determined. The Blue Devils (8-6 SUNYAC) can finish as high as fourth -- they must win twice this weekend and get help to move up -- and as low as seventh in the final standings. The top four teams earn home playoff games next Tuesday.

But first things first -- an 8 p.m. Friday date with Geneseo. The first 600 Fredonia State students to attend will receive a free t-shirt and a chance to win Sportsmanship Night prizes ranging from free food at area restaurants to the grand prize of two tickets to a Cleveland Cavs' home game.

The final men's basketball game of the regular season is 4 p.m. Saturday vs. Cortland. The Blue Devils and Red Dragons enter the weekend tied for fifth place and in pursuit of fourth-place Buffalo State (10-5). The Bengals' regular-season finale is Friday at Oswego.

"At this point in the season," men's head coach Kevin Moore said, "we're playing our best basketball and to have two very good opponents coming to play here at Fredonia, you just couldn't ask for anything more. We have a great opportunity in front of us this weekend."

It's also a home hockey weekend at the Steele Hall Ice Arena. Brockport visits Friday and Geneseo on Saturday to close out the regular season for the Blue Devils, who find themselves among five teams fighting for the final three SUNYAC playoff spots. Anything less than two wins and the Blue Devils will miss the conference post-season tournament for the first time since the 2001-02 season and only the third time in Jeff Meredith's 21 seasons as head coach.

ON THE ROAD: The men's and women's track and field team will participate Saturday starting at Cornell University ... A select few men's and women's swimmers and divers are off to Kenyon College Invitational in hopes in improving on their season-best times and qualifying for the NCAA meet. The competition begins at 1:30 p.m.
