FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Freshman pitcher Nick Cummings (Akron) nailed down his third save of the spring with a scoreless seventh in game two as the Devils sent the Blue Boys of Illinois College home with a pair of losses. The Devils claimed a 7-6 victory. They won game one, 10-1.
Ricky Carlson (Frewsburg) (2-0) went the distance in game one. He scattered nine hits, striking out two and walking two.
The Devil offense was paced by Jordan Basile (Jamestown) with three hits and four runs scored. Jeremy Borst (Clarendon, Pa./Sheffield) also had three hits. Josh Greco (Lockport) and Donnie Kirsch (Attica) each went two for two and scored two runs.
In game two, the Devils did all their damage in the second and third innings. Taylor Gahagen (Williamsville/Williamsville North) led off with a double. Greco followed with a single, before Mark Majka (Depew/St. Francis) plated Gahagen with a groundout. Tommy Dee (Lackawanna/Bishop Timon) plated Greco with a single.
The Devils then led off the third inning with three consecutive singles. Borst and Rob Herrmann (Trumansburg) each drove in one run. Gahagen followed that with a three run home run to give the Devils a 7-0 advantage.
The Blue Boys battled back in the bottom of the third. Three singles, a walk and a home run off starting pitcher Tom Hausler (Williamsville/Williamsville East) made it a 7-5 ballgame.
The Devil bullpen then stepped up. Andy Dlugosz (Lackawanna/Bishop Timon) worked the fifth and sixth, allowing one unearned run, as Illinois pulled with in one, 7-6. Cummings worked the seventh to secure the win. Hausler (2-0) was credited with the win.
Six Devils had multi-hit games. Basile added three more in game two, giving him six for the afternoon.
The Devils swept all three double headers in Ft. Myers, and improve to 7-1. They wrap up the Southern swing with a nine-inning contest vs. Bethel on Friday.
