FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State rallied for four runs in the sixth inning to take the lead and hung on to defeat Penn State Behrend, 6-5, Tuesday afternoon at Ludwig Field.
The Blue Devils improved to 9-1 while Behrend dropped to 9-2. The third of four Blue Devil pitchers, Nick Cummings (Akron) was credited with the win while Matt Saeva (Albion) earned the save, going three innings and allowing one run.
Trailing 4-2 entering the last of the sixth, Blue Devil batters responded with three straight singles and two infield outs to tie the game at 4-4.
Singles by Eric Dietrick (Hamburg), Jeremy Borst (Clarendon, Pa.), and Taylor Gahagen (Amherst) loaded the bases. Josh Melquist (Jamestown) grounded to short to score Dietrick, and Joe Kephart (Niagara Falls) grounded to first to score Borst with the tying run.
Jordan Basile (Jamestown) singled in Gahagen. Josh Greco (Lockport) then connected a double to score Basile for a 6-4 Blue Devil lead.
The first two Blue Devil runs came in the third inning. A double by Gahagen, a wild pitch, a single by Basile, an error, and hits by Greco and Rob Herrmann (Trumansburg) figured in the scoring.
The Blue Devils are back in action Saturday at Oneonta, their first SUNYAC games of the season.
