NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -- Fredonia State split its second straight SUNYAC doubleheader in all-or-nothing fashion.
The Blue Devils (11-3, 2-2 SUNYAC) cruised to a 22-11 win Monday in the first game of the doubleheader at New Paltz. The host Hawks (3-14, 1-3 SUNYAC) battled back for a 2-0 victory in the nightcap.
On Saturday, the Blue Devils were defeated 4-0 by Oneonta in the first of two games, then bounced back for a 10-2 victory.
Fredonia State cracked 15 hits and took advantage of 11 walks in the Game 1 win at New Paltz. Don Kirsch (Cowlesville/Attica) had four RBI while Jordan Basile (Jamestown) and Joe Kephart (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield) had three RBI each. In addition, Josh Melquist (Jamestown) walked four times and scored every time, while Mark Majka (Depew/St. Francis) hit a pinch-hit homer.
Andy Dlugosz (Lackawanna/Timon-St. Jude) was the winning pitcher in relief of starter Matt Saeva (Albion). Dlugosz pitched the final 4 2/3 innings.
Game 2 starter Tom Hausler (Williamsville/Williamsville East) had a strong outing but lacked the offensive support and fell to 2-1. He allowed six hits and one earned run over eight innings. New Paltz's Jimmy Donohue scatttered five hits, including doubles to Rob Herrmann (Trumansburg) and Bryan Bongiovanni (Fredonia). Donohue struck out six and did not walk a batter.
