HAMBURG, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State baseball team continued its trend of winning big and losing small, splitting a doubleheader at Hilbert College on Tuesday. They won game one 12-3, and dropped the nightcap, 6-3.

The Devils used 12 hits and eight stolen bases to put up a dozen runs in the opener. Vinnie VanAuker (Hilton) had a productive game, collecting two hits a walk and three stolen bases. Josh Melquist (Jamestown) drove in a team-best three runs. Matt LaPorte (Westfield) had a pair of doubles and two RBI. Jordan Basile (Jamestown) and Rob Herrmann (Trumansburg) also had a pair of hits.

Freshman Nick Cummings (2-0) (Akron) went six innings on the mound, allowing three runs, two earned, striking out six and walking two. Alan Schoeneck (Syracuse/West Genesee) struck out the side to finish the game.

The Devils struck first in game two, as Basile led off the game with a single and Josh Greco (Lockport) double him in.

Hilbert bounced back with a run in the first and two more in the third. Two runs were the result of leadoff walks, and the third a hit by pitch.

The Hawks rallied for three more in the fifth, the result of a squeeze bunt and two-run double by Matt Begeal, taking a 6-1 lead.

The Devils did not go quietly, though. They loaded the bases in the sixth, but failed to score. They scored two in the seventh on RBI singles by Jake Nowak (Maryvale) and Greco to make it 6-3. Bryan Bongiovanni (Fredonia) drew a walk to load the bases and bring the go-ahead run to the plate before Hilbert got the final batter to strike out.

Matt Bowman (0-2) (Breesport/Horseheads) to the loss for the Devils.

The Devils complete a four-day, six-game road trip at 3-3, and are now 12-4 on the season.
