FREDONIA, N.Y. - Fredonia State took a big step toward earning a post-season bid by sweeping Oswego in a SUNYAC doubleheader Saturday at Ludwig Field.
The Blue Devils (15-5, 5-3 SUNYAC) won the first game, 12-4, behind the eight-strikeout pitching of senior right-hander Tom Hausler. Senior left-hander Ricky Carlson pitched a complete game in the nightcap, a 6-3 Blue Devil victory.
In the first game, Bryan Bongiovanni went 4 for 5 with seven RBI with a home run and a triple. Josh Melquist and Don Kirsch had two hits each. Hausler picked up the win with seven innings of work and Rob Herrmann had two hits and three RBI.
In the nightcap, the Blue Devils were trailing 3-2 before taking the lead with four runs in the fourth inning. A two-run double by Josh Greco was the big hit. Melquist, Kirsch, and Joe Kephart each had a pair of hits.
Carlson scattered nine hits in earning the victory to raise his record to 5-0. He walked one and struck out five.
With the win, the Blue Devils tied Brockport for third place in the SUNYAC. The top four teams makes the conference tournament.
The Blue Devils are back in action Tuesday with a home non-conference doubleheader vs. Keuka before taking on Plattsburgh at home next Sunday. That and a doubleheader April 25 at Brockport are the Blue Devils' final four regular-season SUNYAC games.
