ERIE, Pa. -- An eight-run first inning was too much for the Fredonia State baseball team to overcome in a 14-6 loss at Penn State Behrend on Friday afternoon.
The first eight batters for the Lions reached base and scored, chasing starting pitcher Ricky Webster (0-1). Behrend would add a run in the second to take a 9-0 lead.
Fredonia State finally broke through in the third following a base hit by Jordan Basile and a double by Josh Greco. In the fifth, Basile would score again, this time on a sacrifice fly by Mark Majka.
Blue Devil reliever Al Schoeneck held Behrend in check until the sixth. Kessler plated three runs with a triple, and Josh Fyffe drove him in on a single, as Behrend built a 14-2 lead.
The Devils would cap the scoring in the eighth. Matt LaPorte drove home two runs with a bases-loaded single. Vinnie VanAuker and Tommy Dee each plated a run with RBI singles.
Basile led the Blue Devil attack with three of the team's 12 hits. Harry Latta had four hits, and Ed Kessler had three to pace the Lions, who improve to 22-5.
The Devils (18-6) play host to Plattsburgh on Sunday in a SUNYAC doubleheader beginning at noon.
