FREDONIA, N.Y. -- After sweeping a doubleheader from Plattsburgh on Sunday, the Fredonia State baseball team needed Oswego to defeat Oneonta at least once in its doubleheader. Late Sunday evening, the results came in. Very late.
In a day that saw 58 runners score, Oswego claimed a 15-13 victory in game two, after losing game one 27-3. The Devils were in.
The team is now 20-6, and tied the school record for wins, set by the 1982 team. It will be the Blue Devil's first taste of the conference tournament since 1991.
The team's success can be attributed to all-around steady play. Currently, they top the SUNYAC in batting (.337), rank second in fielding percentage (.962) and third in ERA (3.62).
As a team, the Devils have swiped 72 bases in 79 tries (91 percent), while allowing only 13 stolen bases. In addition, they have picked off 15 runners.
At 7-3, the Devils are in second place, one game behind Cortland (8-2) with two SUNYAC games left to play. An opportunity to host the conference tournament is still a possibility. The Devils are 8-1 at Ludwig Field this season.
The post-season picture will play itself this weekend, as the Devils travel to Brockport (6-4) for a Saturday doubleheader. Cortland visits Plattsburgh (4-4) in the doubleheader of most interest to the Devils. New Paltz (3-7) is at Oneonta (4-6) in other Saturday action. The regular season ends on Sunday, with Oswego (2-8) making the trip to Plattsburgh.
The top four teams make the tournament, with the highest seed hosting.
Current SUNYAC standings:
Cortland 8-2
Fredonia St. 7-3
Brockport 6-4
Plattsburgh 4-4
Oneonta 4-6
New Paltz 3-7
Oswego 2-8
