BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State baseball set a team record for wins Thursday by sweeping the Medaille Mavericks in a doubleheader, 16-5 and 4-1.
The Blue Devils won their 21st game in the opener, one more than the 1982 team, which stood as the most by a Blue Devil team before this season. Unleashing 14 hits overall, the Blue Devils had three big innings: three runs in the first, four in the fourth, and six in the seventh and final frame.
Matt LaPorte (Westfield) and Mark Majka (Elma/St. Francis) each were 3 for 3, with LaPorte leading the team with four RBI. Josh Greco (Lockport) also had three hits while Jordan Basile (Jamestown) scored five runs and stole two bases. The Blue Devils stole 13 bases overall. Nick Cummings (Akron) improved to 4-0 this season with four innings of relief work.
Matt Saeva (Albion) improved to 3-0 after tossing a four-hitter in the second game as the Blue Devils (22-6) added one more win to the school record. Saeva struck out nine and walked just two over seven innings. Basile led the offense with two doubles and a single, giving him 44 hits this season and moving him closer to the career-hit record of Matt Clark (142 hits, 2000-03). Basile has 139 hits in four seasons.
The other top hitter in Game 2 was Greco, SUNYAC's leading hitter with a .407 average through last Sunday. His two hits gave him five on the day and 42 this spring. The Blue Devils (7-3 SUNYAC) head back to conference competition Saturday when they travel to Brockport to face the Golden Eagles in a doubleheader starting at noon.
