FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Two Fredonia State student-athletes have received SUNYAC weekly honors in their respective sports.
Senior setter Alyssa Torpy (Henrietta/Rush-Henrietta) was chosen SUNYAC Volleyball Player of the Week, while junior distance runner Tom Williams (Queensbury) was chosen Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week.
Torpy, a four-year starter, led the Blue Devils to a fifth-place finish Saturday at the Rochester Institute of Technology Invitational. She averaged 9.4 assists per set over the team's four matches, three resulting in 3-0 wins. Her best match of the weekend came against Clarkson, in which she had 39 assists and three blocks, in one of the 3-0 wins. Torpy also won the SUNYAC Player of the Week once during the 2007 season and was chosen First Team All SUNYAC.
On Sept. 13, Williams led the Blue Devils to a second-place finish at the Brockport Invitational. He was the top Blue Devil finisher and second overall in a time of 16:06 for 5,000 meters, only eight seconds behind the runner who finished second last season at the 2008 NCAA Division III championship meet. The Blue Devils finished ahead of two teams ranked high than them in the most recent NCAA Division III poll.
